The Beginning – A New Kind of Solar Farm

In the highlands of Yunnan Province, tea plantations have been cultivated for centuries. The region's elevation, cloud cover, and humidity create ideal growing conditions for premium tea leaves.

But in 2024, a new layer was added to this ancient landscape: solar panels.

The project: A 10,285-acre "tea-solar" hybrid development across three sites in Xishuangbanna – the largest bifacial ("double-glass") solar project of its kind in the world.

"The concept was simple but ambitious," the project manager explained. "We would mount solar panels above the tea bushes – providing shade that actually benefits tea growth while generating clean power below. But to make the economics work, we needed panels that captured light from both sides – reflected light from the ground beneath the panels, not just direct sunlight from above."

The Challenge – Double-Glass Demands Double Performance

What makes "double-glass" modules different?

Standard solar panels have a glass front and a polymer backsheet. Double-glass (bifacial) modules replace the backsheet with glass, allowing the panel to absorb reflected light from the ground on its underside – boosting overall output by up to 5%.

But that extra glass came with challenges for the aluminum frame:

"We tested frames from three suppliers," the project's procurement director told us. "Two failed the drop test – the frames bent under the weight of the double glass during lifting. We needed a frame designed specifically for bifacial modules."

Alloy Selection – 6005-T6 for Higher Strength

We selected 6005-T6 aluminum alloy – offering 25% higher yield strength than standard 6063 frames – specifically to handle the additional weight of double-glass modules without increasing profile thickness.

Surface Treatment – Yunnan's High-Humidity Demands

We applied AA20 anodized finish – significantly thicker than standard AA10 – to resist the high humidity, UV radiation, and acidic rain of Yunnan's tea-growing region.

Testing Beyond Industry Standards:

2× IEC standard humidity testing (survived 2,000 hours, 85°C/85% RH)

Drop testing with double-glass modules (simulated handling damage)

Thermal cycling -40°C to +85°C – 200 cycles

Double-glass-specific fatigue testing (simulated wind/vibration over 30 years)
